Red Velvet Cupcakes

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 oz bottle Red Food Color
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • **Cream Cheese Frosting**
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract *Optional*
  • 1.5 cups confectioners’ sugar

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt in medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed 5 minutes or until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time.
  4. Mix in sour cream, milk, food coloring and vanilla. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until just blended. Do not overbeat.
  5. Fill paper-lined muffin cups, filling each cup 2/3 full.
  6. Bake 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted into cupcake comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire rack 5 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely.
  7. Create frosting, Beat cream cheese, softened, butter, sour cream and vanilla extract in large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until smooth.
  8. Frost cooled cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting. Enjoy!


It’s February and that time of the year again..I present to you Red Velvet Cupcakes. It’s a fairly simple recipe and a delicious cream cheese icing. This is a good recipe if you want to make red velvet cupcakes and you don’t have access to buttermilk but have sour cream available. I also didn’t realize how much red food coloring is required into making these. I still need practice with piping and doing decorations as some of these frosting. I created half of it in mini cupcake sizes and half as the normal sizes, the mini ones are nice to as they are easy to distribute and have people enjoy them without making it too much. Overall It was good and easy to make and makes for a great Valentine’s Day treat.
